Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum temporary left the campaign trail this week, in order to care for his daughter, Bella. She has a chromosomal disorder called Trisomy 18. Bella is now in the hospital, recovering from pneumonia. How much do you know about Trisomy 18? Isabella Santorum, who is called “Bella”, is three years old. She is the youngest of Rick Santorum’s children. This week, Bella got sick from pneumonia, and was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Bella Santorum Turns Four Years Old!

Bella Santorum, the daughter of Rick Santorum, has turned four years old! Bella has a genetic disorder called Trisomy 18. Many children who are born with this disorder do not live long enough to see their first birthday. Bella, however, has beaten the odds once again. Trisomy 18 is a genetic disorder in which a person is born with a third copy of genetic material from chromosome number 18. Usually, people will have two copies of that portion of the chromosome, not three. The word “trisomy” refers to the three copies. Bella Santorum is Back in the Hospital

Isabella Santorum, “Bella”, is the youngest daughter of politician Rick Santorum. Earlier this year, she was in the hospital because she had pneumonia. Bella has Trisomy 18, which causes many health problems. She was recently rushed to the hospital, and the family is requesting prayers and privacy. Rick Santorum’s Health Insurance is Insufficient

Rick Santorum is one of the Republican candidates who is hoping to become the Republican nominee for the 2012 Presidential election. In his campaign, he has mentioned many times that he would like to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act. Interestingly, his own health insurance is insufficient to cover the medical needs of his family. It is no secret that Rick Santorum has extreme dislike for the health reform laws that are part of the Affordable Care Act, ACA. Sarah Palin Writes About Life With Trig

Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska, is the parent of a child who has Down Syndrome. Her son, Trig, is almost four years old now. Palin wrote an article for Newsweek about her “Life With Trig”. You probably recognize the name Sarah Palin. She was the Republican party nominee for Vice President in the 2008 presidential election. She was on the ticket with the Presidential party nominee for President in 2008, John McCain. Previous to that, she was Governor of Alaska, from 2006 to 2009. 2012 is an election year. I have decided to take a brief look at the family trees of the candidates who are hoping to become the Republican nominee for President. Genetic Screening During Pregnancy

A person’s risk for some genetic disorders may be calculated based upon the occurrence of those disorders in other family members. Also, for both disorders that have been linked to genealogy and those that have not yet been linked to genealogy there are times when an individual can be screened for genetic disorders. One of the times when genetic screening is available is during the first trimester of pregnancy. The first trimester screen is a noninvasive test that consists of two parts.
